Choreography Sarah Huygens Jawla

In Suwokono, home in the West African language Mandinka, choreographer Sarah Jawla welcomes the audience in “the ship of fools”. A space in which five characters, each with their own ritual, try to break free of the emotions of anger, shame and confusion that hold them. Will they be able to fight free and return home? And what happens when these feelings turn into invisible demons and take on a life of their own? The rituals are musically supported by percussion and soundscapes, inspired by West African rhythms. Electronic and acoustic music sometimes pull each other out of balance but at the same time complement each other. The performers move on the basis of their ritual, each with its own rhythm in movement or text reading. Their bodies and the light play a crucial role on stage and projected images embrace their movements.
